You gave me some of my favorite characters and then TOOK THEM AWAY DURING THE CLIMAX? While Hyperion ends grimly, with the survivors of the Shrike Pilgrimage coming to face the Valley of the Time Tombs (where we know the villainous Shrike awaits us), The Fall of Hyperion abandons them. Even waiting a few months between reading may drastically prevent your understanding of the work. The Fall of Hyperion absolutely must be read back-to-back with Hyperion. While they are stylistically farther apart than most political parties, the plot is too tied together for anybody to consider them separate. (jumping into the review a bit early, but who cares, I gave you background last time!) Let’s get on board the Dan Simmons master train.
